Steffi triumphs in the mud
19. April 2011
Steffi Laier, a member of the Red Bull Teka KTM team, had a pretty wet weekend this week in balmy Greece.

The track, ordinarily very firm and dry, turned into a real swamp after heavy rain, and so the organizers were forced to call off Saturday’s race. On Sunday the women’s race was held despite the muddy track, and the star under these difficult conditions was the rider of an orange bike with an Akrapovič exhaust. After numerous other competitors lost their battles with the slippery surface, Laier crossed the finish line with a whopping lead of a minute and 39 seconds.

Steffi didn’t complain too much about the mud bath: “When I arrived on Friday I just thought that the track looked nice but too easy and I was actually hoping for some rain but this was a bit too much…. I liked the race even like this; it was just difficult to keep my feet on the foot-pegs because the mud was so sticky but I survived and won, so I’m happy about that.”

With her new 25 points, Steffi Laier is firmly anchored in first position in the overall standings. The speedy German will now have some time for rest and practice because the next race does not take place until 12 June in Vantaa, Finland.
